These whole class reading sessions aim to develop children’s comprehension skills, whilst introducing them to a number of Geography non-fiction texts. The three sessions include the extracts/ texts and presentations for the whole class reading sessions on: -The World Book - USA, Mexico and Brazil; -Beach Explorer - How Beaches are Formed, Beach Plants and Animals -The Ordinance Survey Kids’ Adventure Book - Introduction to Maps Each whole class reading session contains a series of activities aiming to develop children’s retrieval, explanation, inference, prediction and summarising skills. There is also a vocabulary check immediately after each extract is read to clarify any unfamiliar/ difficult language. The tasks are comprised of quick-check questions, solo thinking, pair/ group discussions and deeper thinking activities. The sessions are best suited for children within years 3-5, although with minor adaptations they could feasibly be used with slightly younger and older year groups. These whole class reading session aims to develop children’s fluency and comprehension skills whilst reading engaging and informative texts related to ‘The Renaissance.’ Included in the bundle are three complete whole class reading resource packs, with everything that you need to teach the whole class reading lessons on: -The Renaissance Period (non-fiction text); -The Mona Lisa (original information text); -Romeo and Juliet (Andrew Matthews/ Tony Ross adaptation). All of the extracts/ readings that are needed for the lessons are provided (in both Word and PDF), as are the step-by-step Powerpoints containing all of the activities. These aim to develop children’s VIPERS skills: vocabulary, inference, prediction, explanation, retrieval, sequencing and summarising. This engaging and purposeful series of lessons enables children to gradually build towards composing an effective, well-structured recount, based on a journey of their choice. This lesson bundle contains all six lessons from the series: -Lesson 1: What is a Recount? -Lesson 2: Vocabulary Building -Lesson 3: Developing Sentences -Lesson 4: Creating Cohesion -Lesson 5: Varying Sentences -Lesson 6: Editing and Redrafting In my experience, the lessons each take between 2 and 3 hours to deliver, so depending upon your own pace there is likely 12 lessons of content here. Each lesson contains an eye-catching and comprehensive PowerPoint presentation, in addition to any additional sheets, templates, or structure strips required for the lesson - everything needed to teach is included. A range of knowledge recall, think, pair, share, independent, and peer/self review activities are included to ensure that writing compositions are gradually enhanced over the course of the unit. These lessons were originally created for children in lower Key Stage 2 (Years 3 and 4), however, could easily be used for upper KS2 with only minor adaptations. The focus of the recount in these resources is a ‘journey’, but the resources have been made in a way that they can be easily adapted to your chosen topic/ subject matter.

Children love learning from these resources, whilst they are also of great use to teachers, as there is explicit information within each task regarding which comprehension strands the task is designed to demonstrate. They are also generic enough to ensure that they are appropriate for use with all texts. Both the Year 3 Booklet and the Year 4 Booklet (normally 2 pounds each) are included. I’ve also thrown in a literacy writing mat for free! Examples of activities within the booklets include: - Word Boxing - to enable students to demonstrate that they can: ‘Show an understanding of words that capture the readers’ interest and imagination’ and ‘Use a dictionary to check the meanings of words that you have read’ - FBI Vocabulary Agent - to enable students to demonstrate that they can: ‘Show an understanding of words that capture the readers’ interest and imagination.’ - Rap Battle - to enable students to demonstrate that they can: ‘Read aloud poems, and perform playscripts.’ - Organised Ernie - to enable students to demonstrate that they can: ‘Say how a text is organised in order to help you understand it, for example using paragraphs, headings, sub-headings, and inverted commas to show speech.’ Plus many, many more activities (each booklet is over 20 pages in length!) Designed on A3, they simply need to printed and given to students before they begin creative writing tasks.
